Nature Club--Seeds!

Hello All!

On October 10th we had another Nature Club gathering. The topic this month was seeds. What an interesting and enjoyable topic! It was very sunny and windy, as well. Quite a lot of people came to this month's Nature Club so it was very fun!

We first met at the Pavilion and Kay taught us basic and interesting info about seeds, such as that fruit has seeds. She showed us examples of seeds such as buckeyes, walnuts, pinecones, acorns, chesnuts, pecans, and "flying helicopters". Then we learned an Acorn Song! We also learned ways seeds travel such as water, wind, animals, and people.

Then we started our "Seed Bracelets." What a fun project Kay showed us! You take a piece of masking tape that is enough to wrap around your wrist. Then you turn it over so the sticky side is facing upwards and wrap it around your wrist like a bracelet. Then you can stick seeds onto the tape. Once we were finished, we had quite a lot of seeds! Some of them were from thistles, milkweed, switchgrass, Indian Prarie Grass, and many more.

After that, we went on a "Seed Hunt." We went on a nature walk and Kay showed us all kinds of seeds and plants. We also had a seed-flying contest to see which seeds flew the farthest.

Also, Kristin and Evan Hiemstra from Kansas City came to Iowa and joined us for Nature Club. Kristin (age 12) had been to Brenton Arboretum once before and loves visiting the arboretum when she comes to Iowa. This was Evan's (age 8) first time. "I really enjoyed looking for seeds, the nature playground, and finding a caterpillar!" Evan said. "It is fun!" Kristin also said, "I really like visting Brenton and can't wait to show my parents this place! I also like going to the streams and sitting by the ponds. Learning about seeds is fun, as well!"
