At 1:00 we had the Afternoon Nature Club for Heed. There were 23 people at the afternoon club today--5 families and Kay Meyer, who is the naturalist at Brenton Arboretum. She is great at working with kids and teaching everyone about nature. I enjoy learning from her so much! Thanks, Kay, for letting us do this Nature Club and this Heed Nature Journal!!!
Today was pretty foggy and started out "slightly rainy" and then it rained a lot. It was not sunny today. Our topic for the club today was Leaves & Trees. The Arboretum is starting to look more like fall and is truly beautiful. The club members met at the Pavilion and we started out by playing a true/false game. There were 3 benches and we (the kids) sat down on one of the benches. Then Kay said a sentence about nature and we had to determine whether the statement was true...or false. It was a very fun and a great learning game!
Kay showed us samples of bark and parts of tree trunks. She makes learning so fun! Then we learned about Leaf Collections and Kay showed us one of her leaf collections that she had laminated. We got to do a Leaf Quiz with Kay with the Leaf Collection, too.
Then we went out on a Tree/Leaf Nature Walk (clad in raincoats) and found all sorts of things including a catalpa tree, buckeye trees, american elm hybrid, and lots more. A bunch of the kids, including John-Daniel, Jeb, and Zach, found frogs and toads. There were Common Brown Frogs, too. Maddie also found a "leaf hopper" insect, as well. Kay showed us a buckeye that had fallen from the tree and we got to open it up. That was really interesting!
A lot of the kids journaled and drew nature pictures and we had so much fun in God's Beautiful Creation! I cannot wait till next time! Thanks so much, Kay, and thanks Brenton Arboretum!
